This species was named by R. Tucker Abbott in 1958, in his publication on the marine mollusks of the island of Grand Cayman.〔Abbott, R. T. 1958. The marine mollusks of Grand Cayman Island, British West Indies. Monographs of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 11: () + 138 pp., 5 pls. 31 Dec〕 But by 1974, in his book "American Seashells", Abbott had decided that the shell was simply a juvenile of what is now called ''Montfortia emarginata''. However, the species was re-instated by James McLean in a 2011 monograph on the subfamily Emarginulinae.〔McLean J.H. (2011) Reinstatement of the fissurellid subfamily Hemitominae, with the description of new genera, and proposed evolutionary lineage, based on morphological characters of shell and radula (Gastropoda: Vetigastropoda).
